The Facts

Every day around 100 people in the UK start to lose their sight.

There are almost 2 million people in the UK who are living with sight loss that has a significant impact on their daily lives.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the cause of blindness for at least 500,000 people in the UK. At the moment there are no cures or any truly effective treatments.

One in every nine people aged over 60 are currently living with sight loss.

The number of young adults affected by sight loss has more than doubled in the last 25 years.

75% of blind or visually impaired people of working age are unemployed.

There are 40,000 blind and partially sighted children and young people in the UK.


Worldwide Statistics

Every 5 seconds one person in the world goes blind. Globally, the number of people of all ages living with sight loss is estimated to be 285 million, of whom 39 million are blind.

About 90% of the world’s visually impaired live in developing countries.

An estimated 19 million children worldwide have sight loss.
